The AZ-1 is a real rarity, so parts can be hard to come by, but believe it or not, my local Mazda dealer can get any OEM part I need as well, as long as I have a part number. I bought brand new weatherstripping last year and did it through the Mazda dealer here. An added bonus is that Mazda will ship any part from Japan anywhere in the world for free!
That's only partially true. Although I've only tried to source JDM accessories, and not actual replacement parts.

i'd feel confident buying one because i get to japan quite often and i have the language skills required to scour the internet and local clubs for parts. but i don't want to pay JDM markup for this. I have a RHD mini that is my current 'fun but ultimately not convenient runabout' car. i'd pay JDM markup on a Pao, however, because it would be cheaper than buying a nice 2CV.

"Mazda will ship any part from Japan anywhere in the world for free"
and this?
More like, "Mazda will send you 11$ of weather stripping for only 75$. FREE SHIPPING!"

I've had to order parts for US cars that only resided in Japan (no stock in local US warehouses or Canada), and they do not charge you anything above and beyond dealer cost (well, for me, since I work for one).
Yeah, it takes a few weeks to get here, but it is true: FREE SHIPPING.

Yeah, Mazda does alright. They've been a great company to work for.
And they really look after the classic car community. I can still get a TON of new OE parts for 80's RX-7s, and early Miatas. Most car makers stop producing parts after a car is 10 years old.

It's in San Diego, I'm in San Diego. Needs parts from Japan? I go there quite a bit, now, only one problem....How can I justify this to the wife-y?

I love the line:
"I have the Canadian documents and will sell on a bill of sale I know of several States to obtain titles."
Nothing like selling something illegal...

it's the age-old conundrum: if you have to ask "how can i justify it?" then you probably can't. If i had more money in the bank, if i had a bigger paycheck, and if we had a substantial amount already set aside for Owen Jr's college, then i'd Buy It Now. If i thought this would end up at a reasonable price, i'd sell my Mini immediately, but i think there will be a JDM markup. i just watched a reasonalbe mkII supra go unsold for 3100. i watched a very nice 240z go for 5500. i could have covered one or the other by selling the Mini and to free up garage space, but i think i have too much on my plate and my wife's raised eyebrows told me all i need to know.

yeah, thats the tough part. i have a family friend who imports ricers into ontario and he drives them across to visit in michigan, but he always drives them back. he says 'they keep track of what you drive across' and they'd get suspicious if he kept doing one-way trips.

Yeah, and it's even worse when the car is about to reach the point where it can be legally imported. And contrary to what a lot of people say, it's extremely hard (I won't say impossible) to get proper paperwork for a car brought in illegally after it crosses the 25 year threshold...

In my case "If I didn't have a wife, and kids and a mortgage" For some reason, they really like it when i provide a place to live and food to eat.....

yeah and my wife wants a second kid. everything currently going into the Hoon Account is going to get re-routed to another college fund. i ought to start a farm so i can put these kids to work at 13.

I know those feels, I've got 2 myself. The farm thing is certainly looking to be a better prospect than college. Since I have a townhome I'll probably have to get the cattle cleared by the HOA somehow first.....

HOA, invented by people who took running for High School Class Treasurer seriously.

I agree with that 100%. If I can ever afford to buy another house (I'm in San Diego, it's expensive here!) I won't care what the neighborhood is like as long as there is no HOA.
(If there is no HOA, I can build a moat and defensive walls if i don't like the neighborhood!)
